Off Topic, Free Computer Program

I recently lost “all” of the data on my laptop. To make a long story short, I sent my computer into Toshiba to get the DVD player fixed and it was sent back to me with the factory settings.  Lesson learned! Always back up your data! Anyway, since I lost my Microsoft programs, I was going to have to buy Office all over again, when a friend of mine turned me onto a website called OpenOffice.org. From this site I downloaded “for free” a program that seems to work just as good as Office with all the “bells and whistles”. I’ve been using it now for a few weeks and it’s been great. If someone sends me an Excel file I can easily open up and work on it the same way I would if I were using Excel. I still can’t believe it was free. Office is selling for about $400. Enjoy!

  1. Or better yet, try out some of the web-based “Office” replacements like Google Docs (http://docs.google.com).

After I lost some data on my local machine I decided to try out the online offerings. I hardly use MS Office anymore. Sure you have to contend with Google storing your files — but if you want access anytime/anywhere for your data along with a decent spreadsheet app and calendaring tool (all integrated), it’s pretty decent.

  2. I just checked it out and it does look interesting. I’m going to sign up for it and give it a test run. Thanks for the info.
